Becoming a Homemaker

IMG_4752IMG_4751

So, these past few months I have dived head first into learning how to be a good homemaker.  I’ve continued to find and make new recipes and I’ve gotten into a good routine of making dinner almost every single night.  I’ve been trying very hard to keep the house tidy and comfortable and to be the oil that keeps the family and our days running smoothly.  Most importantly, I’m trying to do my job as the homemaker without nagging or complaining that I have to do it all myself.  It’s an honor to fulfill my role as mother and homemaker and it’s a bonus when my husband lends a helping hand and is way appreciated!  He helps frequently, by the way, but we are both happier when we get to fill our separate roles diligently for our family.  I’m trying very hard to get enough sleep so that I’m not grumpy or impatient with the girls during the day, and I try to involve them in housework whenever I can.  Maggie absolutely loves to help me vacuum and she’s very good at holding the dust pan in place while I sweep!  What a cutie.  Robyn’s very good at making big messes so that Maggie and I never run out of cleaning jobs.  I’m also trying to not spend much time doing personal projects while the girls are awake so that we can do more fun things together.

Now, I’m FAR from perfect as a homemaker, but I’m just learning the ropes.  I feel like I’m finally finding all of the lost homemaker puzzle pieces that I was clueless about before, and I’m starting to realize where the pieces fit.  It will take many many years to make them fit together seamlessly.  I must admit, though, I find so much joy in learning to care for my home and family.  It brings me pleasure to see my family enjoying a meal I created, to have Maggie wrap her arms around me and say “I love you, Mommy!” while we’re playing a game together, and to see my family comfortable and happy in clean clothes and a clean and cozy home.  Ahhh…the joys of motherhood.

I would like to hear what all of you have to say about being a homemaker.  What do you like about being a homemaker?  What is the one job you despise the most?  For instance, the thing I hate the most is cleaning the shower.  It’s so difficult to reach across the tub to scrub the back wall, and I dunno, I just don’t like scrubbing the walls and stuff.  I’d rather clean the toilet.IMG_5128IMG_5122

I agree- very inspiring. I think sometimes I have a hard time, because I work part time, so I feel like I’m entitled to less house work, but with my husband in med school – he has very little time… Anyway, thanks for the perspective. I also hate dusting- but like clean surfaces! And I also clean the shower while taking a shower- definitely the way to go!

You’re so inspiring! If only I could catch on to half this… it’s like I really want to, but then I just don’t know how! Maybe I just need to start doing one task at a time and just worry about that for awhile until I have it down.

I agree with you about scrubbing the shower- probably my second least favorite chore! My first- laundry!!! It drives me bonkers, and mostly because I let it build up until I have about four loads that all need folded, and I just don’t want to do that many. I need to start making myself do a load a day, and then I don’t think I’d mind it so much.

Have you read any other good books about this? I am reading that Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands book now. It’s real good. Thanks for recommending it!

Affy, thank you so much for this blog post! I too love being a mother and a homemaker! I’ve been struggling with it all lately, so it was very very very good to hear what you have to say about enjoying being a mother and wife. For me, I hate dusting, but I do it once a day, just because I really can’t stand dust! However, I absolutely love to vacuum, ahhhhh…..my favorite part of the day is when I vacuum and have a dirt free house for a whole 5 seconds!!!! Oh, and the shower thing, I suggest cleaning the shower while you are taking a shower, so much easier. I started doing this at least 5 years ago and I will never go back! Keep up the good homemaking skills, Affy, you truly are an amazing mother and I do admire you!

Your girls are getting so big! And they are so so cute! What a good mother you are. Motherhood really is such a joy! I love being a homemaker and a stay at home mom. I love cleaning and cooking but my least favorite job would be cleaning up after dinner! By that time I am just so ready to relax! But Kim usually helps out a ton so I can’t complain too much! :)
